Remote sensing of atmospheric boundary layer composition using infrared satellite observations.
The thesis research has for general objective to revisit the capabilities of thermal infrared satellite sounders for monitoring the composition of the atmospheric boundary layer. Measurements from the IASI sounder will be used primarily for our work. The Arctic, which experiences strong temperature inversions during winter, will be central to the thesis research: we aim at investigating there air pollution by sulfur dioxide in the industrial Norilsk area, the composition of Arctic haze but also methane releases by thawing permafrost. Additionally, we will investigate pollution in mid and tropical latitude megacities, which will provide case studies for positive thermal contrasts.
