See the useful Links at the bottom for configuring your VUB Office 365 mailbox for Apple devices.
Configuring Apple Mail for POP/IMAP access (not Office 365)
To manage your e-mail on your Mac, you first have to create an account. Open the File
menu and choose Add account...
If you already created an account for your VUB or ULB address, you only have to make sure that the parameters of that account are correct. You can do so in the "Preferences...", in the section "Accounts".
On the next window, specify your name and e-mail address, you can leave the password empty at this time.
Incoming mail server
Then you will have to choose the Account Type
: a POP account or an IMAP account.
If you choose POP as type, you will manage your mail on the computer itself, whereas with IMAP the messages will be stored on the mailserver itself and you will only have access when you're online; for more details about POP and IMAP, please see the link below.
After having chosen the account type, choose a Description
for your account (ex. My VUB or ULB account
The incoming mail server details are as follows:
- Incoming Mail Server (POP): pop.vub.ac.be
- Incoming Mail Server (IMAP): imap.vub.ac.be
- User Name: loginname
(= NetID, e.g. qpeeters)
Again you can leave the password empty at this time.
Note: When you leave the password empty, Mac Mail will complain that it cannot logon onto the server. You can ignore this message and simply click on Continue again to continue.
On the next page turn on the option Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
and select for Authentication Password
If you have chosen to configure a POP account in Mac Mail, the messages will also be stored on the server. You can configure how long messages are kept on the server in the Account preferences (in the "Preferences"), during this period messages will remain accessible through Webmail or another computer - a period from 1 week to 1 month should suffice; also see the link below on how to keep your mailbox on the server to a reasonable size.
Outgoing mail server
Configuring the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is done in two steps: during account creation and by modifying the Preferences later on.

b) Modifying the outgoing mail server settings in the Preferences
We will now need to make one more correction in the Preferences in order to be able to send e-mail with Mac Mail.
Open the menu Mail
and choose Preferences
. Select the section Accounts
, choose your VUB or ULB account and click on Account information
To modify the server settings of the "Outgoing Mail server (SMTP)", click on smtp.vub.ac.be

option. A window will open where you select the server smtp.vub.ac.be
from the list. Then click on Advanced
Fill in the following specifications:
- activate the option Use custom port
- set the value of the custom port to 587
- activate the option Use secure sockets Layer
- choose Authentication Password
from the POP-up menu
- enter your username if it is not filled in already
- you can leave the password field empty
Click the OK
button to close the advanced section and close the Preferences window. Confirm the changes.
The configuration of your account is now complete and you will be able to send and receive e-mail on this computer in a secure way from anywhere on the Internet.
