You can use Mac Mail to receive and send e-mail with your university's e-mail address, even if your computer is not physically located at the university. You only need to configure an account in your Mac Mail.

To manage your e-mail on your Mac, you first have to create an account. Open the File menu and choose Add account...

If you already created an account for your VUB or ULB address, you only have to make sure that the parameters of that account are correct. You can do so in the "Preferences...", in the section "Accounts".

- Choose the type of account: POP or IMAP
- specify your name and e-mail address
If you choose POP as type, you will manage your mail on the computer itself, whereas with IMAP the messages will be stored on the mailserver itself and you will only have access when you're online; for more details about POP and IMAP, please see the link below.

Next you will have to specify the account parameters:

- Incoming Mail Server (POP): pop.vub.ac.be or pop.ulb.ac.be
- Incoming Mail Server (IMAP): imap.vub.ac.be or imap.ulb.ac.be
- User Name: loginname (= NetID, e.g. qpeeters)

You can leave the password empty at this time.

Next turn on the option Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and select for Authentication Password.
If you have chosen to configure a POP account in Mac Mail, the messages will also be stored on the server. You can configure how long messages are kept on the server in the Account preferences (in the "Preferences"), during this period messages will remain accessible through Webmail or another computer - a period from 1 week to 1 month should suffice; also see the link below on how to keep your mailbox on the server to a reasonable size.

For the Outgoing Mail Server specify smtp.vub.ac.be or smtp.ulb.ac.be and also activate the option Use Authentication. Specify as User Name your loginname (NetID, ex. qpeeters). You can leave the Password empty at this time.

Click the Continue button on the summary page and your account will be created in Mac Mail. You will now be able to send and receive e-mail on this computer in a secure way from anywhere on the Internet.

Note

If you already created an account in Mac Mail, you can change it to a secure version by specifying the following "portnumbers" (in the Account Preferences):

For the Outgoing Mail Server change the portnumber from 25 to 587. The portnumbers of the Incoming Mail Server are 995 for POP and 993 for IMAP.
