The International Solvay Institutes present the first

Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics

Version française

The first Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics is organized from the 19th to the 25th of June 2005, by young PhD students and Post-docs of the service de physique théorique et mathématique of the ULB, the Theoretical Particle Physics Group of the VUB, the service de mécanique et gravitation of the Université de Mons-Hainaut, from the IHES (Bures-sur-Yvette) and from the Mathematical Institute of Oxford University.

The aim is to study tools useful for research in theoretical physics of fundamental interactions, generally supposed to be known but too seldom explained in details.
The summer school will consist of a series of courses: four one-hour lectures in the morning and two hours at the end of the afternoon. The participants who wish to may give a short presentation on a subject of general interest. The lectures will be given in English. The atmosphere should be informal and relaxed, so as to encourage the participants to interact with the speakers, who are not all international experts of the field. As the level of the average participant is not known, the courses are supposed to begin with the basics, be synthetic and self-contained. Reference books will also be placed at the disposal of everyone. The major part of the afternoon is left free, in order to allow spontaneous discussions and/or meetings for questions and answers in connection with the courses of the morning. Pastoral walks, cultural visits are also possible in the afternoon.

Program

The lectures are:
- Beta function, Renormalisation and Quantum Field Theory (Johanna Erdmenger, Glenn Barnich 9h)
-Lie Algebras: representations and applications (Xavier Bekaert, Nicolas Baker, Sophie de Buyl, Francis Dolan, Jeong-Hyuck Park, 8h)
- CFT (Stephan Detournay, 4h)
- Complex Geometry, Calabi Yau (Vincent Bouchard, 4h)
-Yang-Mills and fiber bundles (Laurent Claessens, 3h)
- Twistor Geometry and Gauge Theory (Martin Wolf, 3h)
-Moyal Star product (Sandrine Cnockaert, 1h)

We tried to satisfy most of the people and let as many people as possible talk. It was not the idea of this school to overload the days, so some choices had to be made.
Lecture notes as well as necessary qualifications are available here.

Registration

The registration fee covering the accomodation and the meals amounts to 200€ to be paid to the International Solvay Institutes ( IIPC-Solvay 210-0416482-16, IBAN: BE72210041648216, BIC: GEBABEBB) with the communication "Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics - your name". For registration, send an e-mail to bekaert@(remove)ihes.fr, mentioning your name, university, your opinion on the program of the courses, your desiderata, a subject for a talk if you wish to give one, if you wish financial support for the travel expenses, ... .
The deadline for registration is March 15 and the payment is expected before April 15 2005.
Participants.

Practical information

The summer school will take place in Modave, in the center "Les Cent Fontaines" (http://membres.lycos.fr/lescentfontaines/), located at the border between the Condroz and the Ardennes.
Modave is not very accessible, the simplest solution is to take the train to HUY ( http://www.b-rail.be/main/F/index.php
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en ), from where we will organize a shuttle. Let us know when you arrive in Huy. Directions for drivers can be found here.

Sheets are not available, so it is necessary to bring a sleeping bag or sheets, as well as pillowcases. One should also bring his towels, soap,...

People are expected to arrive on sunday the 19th in the afternoon. A meal is planned for 19h on that evening. The departure will take place on saturday the 25th, after a meal at noon. No lectures are foreseen on the 19th and on the 25th.
