Past events in chronological order :

2011

- Last September 24-29, Bruno attended the EMBO conference "Dynamic endosomes: mechanisms controlling endocytosis" in Chania, Greece (Creta).
- Last August 16-20, Bruno And Myriam attended the "Yeast Cell Biology" meeting organized by the Cold Spring Harbor Lab (near New-York, USA), where Bruno presented a talk about the Bul adaptors of the Rsp5 ubiquitin ligase and their role in Gap1 permease ubiquitylation.
- Last June 19-24, Kassem Ghaddar attended the Gordon conference "Mechanisms of membrane transport" near Boston (USA), where he presented a poster.
- A new paper combining bioinformatics and experimental analyses, conducted in collaboration with Sylvain Brohée and Jacques van Helden, has just been accepted for publication in Nucleic Acids Research - see the PubMed link

A pregraduate student of the university of Namur (FUNDP), Julie Candiracci, joined our lab for a traning work.
- One of our pregraduate student, Mayri Sadoine, joined the lab of Wolf Frommer (Carnegie Institute, Stanford) for a training work (stage) as part of her master. And Oriane Blanchard joined the lab of Nica Borgese in the Institute of Neuroscience (Milan, Italy). 
- A new postdoc, Myriam Crapeau, joined our lab in March. Myriam received her PhD after a nice work on Ure3, a yeast prion.
- One of our pregraduate student, Mayri Sadoine, joined the lab of Wolf Frommer (Carnegie Institute, Stanford) for a training work (stage) as part of her master. And Oriane Blanchard joined the lab of Nica Borgese in the Institute of Neuroscience (Milan, Italy). 
- On May 20th, after the "PhD students day", all members of the institute moved to the Parentville park for an all-together barbecue. Kassem, who presented the progress of his PhD work, was encouraged by his committee.
- April: One of our pregraduate student, Mayri Sadoine, joined the lab of Wolf Frommer (Carnegie Institute, Stanford) for a training work (stage) as part of her master.  
- A new postdoc, Myriam Crapeau, joined our lab in March. Myriam received her PhD after a nice work on Ure3, a yeast prion. 
- March : Nicolas Gérard took a new direction in his carreer and decided to become a teacher in biology at secondary school. We wish him the best.

2010

- For our traditional Christmas party, we organized a nice lunch together with the members of Birthe Fahrenkrog's lab.
- On November 9th, Nicolas Gérard successfully defended his PhD project before the FRIA conveyed jury and was even ranked first of the day. Nicolas's work will concentrate on the endosomal sorting of yeast Gap1 permease. Congratulations to him !
 - On October 20th, our friend and colleague Stephan Vissers retired, after no less than 44 years of research work at the ULB. We of course celebrated this event. On October 20th, the Faculty organized a tribute. On October 26th, all the lab went to Brussels where we visited the Cantillon brewery, probably the last traditional brewery in Brussels. We then went to a restaurant where other special surprises had been prepared for Stephan by the lab members.We then went to the "Grand Place" of Brussels for a drink. See pictures of this special day. A few days later, we had a party in the lab where many former colleagues and members of the lab were invited. Although Stephan has officially retired, he'll still come at the lab every Monday.
- On October 5th, Kevin Wielemans successfully defended his PhD. Congratulations, Kevin, and thanks a lot for your contribution and input. All lab members and Kevin's family enjoyed all together a very nice dinner at restaurant.
- A new project entitled "Structural, biochemical and physiological analysis of amino acid transporters and sensors" has been supported for funding by the "Actions de recherche concertée" (French Community of Belgium). This project will be conduected in collaboration with our colleagues Erik Goormaghtigh, Cédric Govaerts and Martine Prévost (lab of "Structure et Fonction des Membranes Biologiques", ULB).  Good news indeed ...
- In October, Bruno attended and contributed to a workshop organized in Prague, the "Patchy Prague meeting", about membrane domains in yeast and plant cells. 
- Last September, Bruno attended and contributed to the "SYM 2010" meeting in Fribourg (September 6-7, 2010)
- Last September, several lab members attended the "Levures, modèles et Outils IX" meeting organized in Strasbourg. Ahmad Merhi was among the invited speakers and gave a very nice presentation.  
- Three new pregraduate students, Mayru Sadoine, Oriane Blanchard and Maxime Steisel, joined the lab. Welcome to all three !
- Last August, Kassem attended the "Membrane transport Proteins" Gordon conference (Biddeford, USA - August 15-20, 2010)
- Last June, Bruno attended the "Endocytosis and lysosomes" Gordon conference (Andover, Boston, USA - June 20-25, 2010).
- Last May, Stephan, Stephan, and Fadi attended the "Yeasterday 2010 meeting" in Leuven (May 21th).
- Last May, Bruno and Ahmad attended a "Rubicon" sponsored international workshop about "Role of various types of ubiquitin chains in membrane trafficking" organized by Rosine Hauguenauer-Tsapis and coll. (Paris, May 21, 2010)
- On May 17th, after the "PhD students day", all members of the institute moved to the Parentville park for an all-together barbecue.
- Bruno and Fadi attended the "Proteases and protease inhibitors" meeting organized by the Belgian
- On April 1rst, Bruno Gasnier (CNRS, Paris) visited our lab and gave a superb seminar in our institute.
Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Antwerpen (February 5th).
- Nicolas Gérard successfully defended his pre-graduate work about the systematic mutagenesis of Gap1 cytosolic regions. Congratulations to him !

2009

- For our Christmas party, we went to a restaurant in Charleroi (Brasserie de l'Eden) where we have attended a jazz concert by the Thierry Crommen Quartet - see pictures
- On November 12th, we had the great pleasure to welcome Claudio De Virgilio who gave a very nice seminar in our institute.
- The juries of the FRIA attributing fellowships to PhD students evaluated the research proposal of Kassem Ghaddar and the 2-years reports of Ahmad Merhi and Elisa Llinares. All three were successful and … ranked first of their respective commissions ! Congratulations ! and welcome to Kassem - our new PhD student - who will accomplish part of his project in collaboration with Dr. Martine Prévost.  
- On October 1-2, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our institute. ten years already ...
- On September 15th, Nicolas Gérard joined the lab to accomplish his pregraduate thesis work. Welcome to him.
- Bruno, Elsa, Ahmad and Elisa have attended the "27th smyte meeting" last September in Blanckenberg (Belgium). See pictures.  At this meeting, Elisa was invited to give a talk and .. she won the price of the "student best presentation"
! Congratulations Elisa ... for this 250 € price !
- During August, Benjamin Delatte joined the lab for a student job. Benjamin once met Bill Clinton - he said. We didn't believe him until he sent us this picture.
- On June 22th, Cathy Jean successfullly defended her PhD entitled "The amino acid signalling pathway in yeast: role of the SCFGrr1 ubiquitin ligase complex and inlfuence of the Gap1 permease. Congratulations !!
- Bruno has attended the last Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting (YGMB) in Manchester, July 19-24. He was invited to give a talk at a worshop about "Protein trafficking". The topics of his talk was the role of K63 ubiquitin chains in sorting of proteins in the multivesicular body pathway. 
- On April 1rst, Kassem GHADDAR brilliantly defended his pregraduate thesis work. The week after, he left the lab to spend a three months research training in the lab of Pierre COURTOY (UCL).

- Ahmad and Elisa successfully presented their preliminary thesis work at the "PhD students day" organized each year in our institute.
- Christophe Jacob visited us on April 29th to celebrate the publication of our last paper in J Cell Biol - see pictures
- Bruno, Elsa and Fadi attended a fantastic meeting entitled "The ubiquitin family" gathering about 200 experts of the field, Cold Spring Harbor (NY, USA), April 21 - 25. See pictures
- Anna Marie Marini has now set up her own lab (Lab. of Membrane Transport Biology) in our institute. Congratulations to her and all the best !
- The decision is now taken: Birthe Fahrenkrog will join our institute next October and we'll share the same floor in the institute. Welcome to her and her team.
- On January 5th, we had the great pleasure to welcome Birgit Singer-Kruger who gave a very nice seminar in our institute. We had a lot of scientific discussions and shared good time, also in a nice restaurant at the Grand Place of Brussels (of course ..).
- Catherine Jauniaux, our main technician, celebrated the 20th year of work in the lab. We organized a cheese-and-wine party and remembered a lot of souvenirs

2008

- Bruno attended a meeting entitled "Nutrient sensing in plants: what can we learn from model organisms?" , gathering 30 experts of the field and organized by the Banbury Center, Cold Spring Harbor (NY, USA).
- Ahmad, Bruno and Elsa participated to the "The 2008 Golgi meeting - Membrane trafficking in global cellular responses" where Elsa presented a poster on the role of ubiquitin and Gga proteins in traffic of Gap1 permease.
- Elsa and Bruno have attended a meeting on "ESCRTs - from cell biology to pathogenesis" (26-28 August, Cambridge, UK) where Elsa was invited to give a presentation entitled "K63-linked polyubiquitylation of the yeast Gap1 permease is required for its sorting into the multivesicular body pathway".  
- Ahmad, Elisa and Kevin have attended the last "Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology meeting" (July 22-27, Toronto, Canada). Kevin presented a poster on the amino-acid signalling pathway in yeast.

Elsa and Bruno have attended the last Gordon conference on "Glycolipid & Sphingolipid Biology" (17-22 February, Barga, Italy) where Elsa was invited to give a presentation entitled "An essential role of sphingolipids in shaping the yeast Gap1 permease during its biogenesis". 2007

For our traditional celebration of Christmas, we decided this year to spend one day in Bruges, the "Venise du Nord" - see pictures

Both Elisa Llinares and Ahmad Merhi were ranked first by the FRIA juries which examined their research projet. They thus joined the lab to accomplish a PhD work: welcome and good luck !
- Bruno gave a seminar entitled "Rôle de l'ubiquitine et des lipides dans le trafic intracellulaire du transporteur membranaire Gap1 de la levure" at the IRIBHM of ULB on November 12th, 2007.

Mélanie (October 4th) and Elsa (October 24th) publicly presented their PhD work. Both presentations were superb and the afterwards parties in two nice restaurants were great ! The foreign expert for Mélanie was Dr. Dominique Loque working on ammonium transporters in Wolf Fommer's lab (Stanford, USA), and for Elsa, Pr. Howard Riezman (univ. Geneva, Switzerland), very well known for his work on the role of ubiquitin and lipids in protein traffic. See pictures of the drink and restaurant parties.
- September 7th: Elisa Llinares superbly presented her pregraduate lab work and was ranked nr.1 of her year class: congratulations, Elisa !
- Bruno gave a seminar entitled "Amino acid signalling in yeast : central role of transporters" in the Hohenheim University of Stuttgart on June 12th, 2007 (invited by Nico Von Wiren)
- All lab members attended the "Yeasterday 2007" meeting organized in Louvain-la-Neuve on May 1rst, 2007. Mélanie gave a talk about her recent work published in Molecular Microbiology.

May 2007: Fadi Abdel-Sater, a former graduate student of the lab, joined the lab for a post-doc. So great to see him back among us !!
- Bruno gave a seminar entitled "Roles of lipids and ubiquitin in membrane trafficking of yeast amino acid transporters" in the Goethe University of Frankfurt on May 8th, 2007 (invited by Eckhard Boles)
- Bruno and Elsa have attended "The Ubiquitin Family" meeting in Cold Spring Harbor (April 25-27, 2007) where Elsa was invited to give a presentation. See pictures of the meeting (including one of Jim Watson who was there !) and of NYC.
- Elisa Llinares, a pregraduate student, joined our lab to perform a research work on membrane trafficking. Welcome to her!

2006

We had a nice Christmas party in the lab - at the menu, a wonderful paella prepared by Cathy after an equally excellent fish plate prepared by Elsa

- Most members of the lab attended the last "Levures, modèles et outils" meeting in Paris, September 27-29. See the programme (including talks presented by Elsa and Mélanie) and see some pictures.
- Bruno and Stephan have attended the "Yeast Genome 10th anniversary" meeting held in Brussels, September 7-8. See the programme and nice pictures.
- Bruno, Elsa, Cathy and Sylvain attended the last "Small Meeting on Yeast Transport and Energetics" in Prague, August 31-September 3rd. See the programme and nice pictures.
- Bruno attended the last FASEB biannual conference on "Ubiquitin and Cellular Regulation" in Saxtons River (Vermont, USA), July 22-27. See the terrific programme and some pictures of Saxtons River
- Patrice Godard (July 4th 2006) presented the public dissertation for his PhD degree. He then enjoyed some holidays in Turkey (see picture).
- Anna Maria was invited to participate to the "International Conference on Rh protein superfamily" in Paris (May 04-05, 2006)
- Bruno was invited to participate to the 2006 Cologne Spring Meeting on "The control of protein function" in Cologne (March 01-03, 2006)
- Our friend and colleague Antonio Urrestarazu retired in March 2006 after so many years of essential contribution to the scientific achievements of the lab. He has now moved back to Spain, close to his family. We had a memorable party on February 24th in a Spanish restaurant in Brussels to honor him. Thanks so much, Antonio, for everything and so more ...

Fadi Abdel-Sater (Jan 14th 2005) and Elina Nikko (Feb 18th 2005) presented their public dissertation for their PhD degree.
- We have attended the Keystone conference "Ubiquitin and signaling" Taos New Mexico (USA), February 22 - 27, 2005 (see our abstracts)
