The IRMW conducts research into both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms belonging to all three domains of life: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya (in particular, yeasts).

The Microbiology Laboratory has long experience in studying the cellular metabolism of microorganisms and its regulation, notably in bacteria and archaea from extreme environments and in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

It has acquired international reputation in the genetic analysis of metabolic pathways and in the production, purification, and characterisation (both physical and biochemical) of soluble proteins. It is also tackling the structural analysis of metabolic enzymes.
