N. Kruse graduated in technical chemistry (chemical engineering) at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB, Germany) in 1977. The same university awarded him a Ph.D. in engineering sciences after a doctoral thesis at the Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck-Society in Berlin (1980). The following five years he was employed as "wissenschaftlicher Assistant" at the Institute of Chemical Engineering ("Technische Chemie") of the TUB.

After qualifying as a university lecturer at the TUB in 1987 he joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at the ETH Zurich (Switzerland). In 1994 he was appointed to a professorship in the Chemistry department of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) where he founded a research group "Chemical Physics at Surfaces and Heterogeneous Catalysis". After reconstruction at the ULB in 2000 N. Kruse holds the chair of Chemical Physics of Materials (Catalysis-Tribology). He is an editor-in-chief of the Catalysis Letters and Topics in Catalysis. Since July 2008 he is the president of the "International Field Emission Society"
