ESONET stands for European Seas Observatory NETwork, networking institutions, persons, tools and know-how on deep sea observatories. It aims to promote the implementation and the management of a network of long-term multidisciplinary ocean observatories in deep waters around Europe. It wishes to define an organization ' with the necessary critical mass ' capable of gathering the resources of the participating institutes. The ultimate goal is to define durable solutions through a joint programme of activities. OAEx is an exchange project funded under the EU Marie-Curie initiative that aims at reinforcing links, exchanging experiences and methodologies between european and non-european partners in the field of ocean exploration using acoustics. Partnership: CINTAL - Centro de Investigaçao Tecnológica do Algarve, ULB - Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), COPPE - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), IEAPM - Instituto de Estudos do Mar Almirante Paulo Moreira (Brasil) and C-MARS Canadian Marine Acoustic Remote Sensing Facility (UVic, Canada). The HoloFlow project aims to develop and implement innovative 3D imaging digital holographic microscopes to detect, visualize, track and quantify microscopic particles in dynamic environmental fluids, specifically to monitor water quality on-line. Thanks to the use of partial-coherent light sources, the ULB patented technology largely improves the performance of digital holographic microscopy, which a is a decisive advantage for the foreseen commercial activities related to optical sensors for on-line water quality monitoring and in-situ deployment in coastal and marine environments. EHL is in charge of the in-situ system development and applications.
