Registration for 3rd cycle: Doctorate/Research training

The doctorate (PhD) is the “3rd cycle” in the European higher education framework, leading to the title of Doctor. It is awarded after a minimum of 3 years' work, amounting in all to at least 180 credits, and the submission and defence of a thesis, following initial education totalling at least 300 credits leading to a Masters-level qualification.

We invite you to read the regulations for the Doctorate, and all the information explaining his organisation, available (in French) on the Académie Universitaire Wallonie-Bruxelles website.

Initial registration

You should hold:

  • a 2nd-cycle qualification from an institution in the French-speaking Community of Belgium (“Licence” or “Master 120”)

  • a 2nd-cycle (Masters-level) qualification from elsewhere

Registration deadline: 1 December

Joint supervision (“cotutelle”)

If you plan to conduct your research as part of a joint supervision arrangement with another university, it is essential that you contact the Research Office (“Cellule recherche”) in parallel with your admission procedures (Contact person: Sabrina.Dejongh@ulb.ac.be).

If you have already done this, and have a copy of the joint supervision agreement, please remember to attach a duplicate to your application.

Re-registration

Each academic year, until your thesis defence, PhD candidates must re-register, after obtaining various prior agreements.
