Joint supervision (“cotutelle”)

The term joint supervision, or “cotutelle”, refers to the organisation and supervision of research work leading to a doctoral thesis by two university establishments working jointly. Joint supervision can be valuable for the mobility and international experience which it can lead to, or for providing access to a fuller scientific training.

However it is required that part of the doctoral research training and/or research work must be carried out in each of the two universities.

Depending on the regulations applying in the partner universities, joint supervision enables the candidate to obtain either a joint degree, or two degrees based on a single examination.

Procedure

  • Decide with your supervisor and/or support committee whether a joint supervision arrangement would be beneficial.

  • Select and make contact with a co-supervisor in another university.

  • Prepare and sign a joint supervision agreement. A supervisor who wishes to set up a joint supervision agreement should contact the University's Research Department, which is in charge of managing such agreements.
