Doctoral training

Transferable skills training

Transferable skills training is designed to provide you with research skills that are attractive to the academic and private sectors. Transferable skills training is available to all PhD students, and it may also be validated with ECTS credits by your graduate school’s ULB coordinator.

The ULB currently organises four modules:

Language classes

The ULB organises courses on scientific communication in English with support from the Académie Wallonie-Bruxelles.

The General Academic Communication course aims to provide PhD students with the communication skills used in both academic and professional environments (formal communication, scientific presentations at a research seminar, networking, summarising a research project, submitting a research project, writing your academic CV, and more...) The interactive courses are based on the PhD students’ own work.

Academic Writing course: The Research Article course is intended for PhD students who have already written, or are in the process of writing an article. The course is based on the student’s own work and includes additional exercises. It also provides students with an introduction to good writing strategies and techniques.

Several General Academic Communication sessions are held throughout the academic year. The Academic writing course is held in the second semester. For further information on entry requirements, admissions, and course content, take a look at our online documentation:

The next session will be held in 2013-2014. Information and registration: please click on the title of the training (PDF).

The French as a foreign language course is offered to foreign PhD students who wish to perfect their French.

Intellectual property, copyright, and knowledge transfer

This course provides PhD candidates with knowledge of the concepts behind intellectual property and copyright: copyright and open access; protection of intellectual and industrial property (patents, models…); knowledge and technology transfer; business models for knowledge and technology transfer (for instance creation of a spin off ).

Speakers : Françoise Vandooren (Archives and Libraries, ULB), Jean-Marc Brulez, Patrick Di Stefano, Frédéric De Coninck and Bibiane Fréché (Research Administration Office, ULB)

The organisers suggest this training to be awarded 3 ECTS for PhD candidates who attended the whole session. Please note however that it is up to the supervisory committee to decide how many credits to award for each doctoral training.

The next session will be held in 2013-2014.

Teacher training

These courses are intended especially for PhD students who are called upon to support teaching staff.

Marketing your skills

This training was provided by PRODOC in 2009-2012. A new session is now in development.
