The Université libre de Bruxelles is founded on the principle of free inquiry (“libre examen”), which assumes independent judgment and the rejection of all dogma. It upholds openness, tolerance and social equality, and is deeply committed to the defense of democratic and humanistic ideals. It operates on a democratic mode of governance, with all bodies--academic, scientific, student, administrative, technical, and management—fully participating in decision-making.
