Notes

    • The following tutorials have been created using some of the datasets and knowledge collected during the VAKHUM project.
    • One example of tutorial is given below on knee kinematics in three languages (French, Italian and English).
    • The method for tutorial creation is described in a paper currently in submission at “The Anatomical Record”.
    • The three following illustrations briefly explained the principles of the tutorials as used by students.

    • Multimedia classes (Fig 1) give students the opportunity to listen to oral classes commented by academic staff. This multimedia classes are actually 3D narrated navigations performed by a professor using a standard 3D rendering interface in order to visualize 3D models related to the class content. Such presentations are available below.
    • Real 3D models (Fig 2) are also available for students in order to rehearse either the above multimedia classes or a class taught in a conventional teaching room. Such models are freely available from http://www.vakhum.com/free.asp.
    • The current system is in used at the Faculty of Medicine of both University of Brussels (ULB) and National University of Rwanda (NUR) (Fig 3).

Access to an example of tutorials about knee kinematics

    • These links will allow you to download a compressed file (ZIP format) on your system. Once downloaded you must decompress the zip file (see www.winzip.com for free program allowing it).
    • After compression, a VAKHUM directory is created on your disk. This directory will show a *.smi file which is the root file of the current tutorial. Then, simply double-click on that file icon to start the class.
    • If the animations are not starting on your machine then you probably have to install an appropriate video TSCC codec: the latter is available www.techsmith.com/download.asp.
    •
    • French version (4 MBs).
    • English version (3.9 MBs).
    • Italian version (3.8 MBs).
