In a collaborative effort with the Departments of Medicosurgical Gastroenterology and Immunology of the Hôpital Erasme, and the Department of General Surgery of the University Hospital of Ghent, the IMI contributes to develop a new strategy of immunosuppression in liver transplantation with Vincent Donckier as principal investigator.
This innovative approach, based on previous studies in experimental models, consists in the infusion of donor stems cells to reduce the need for immunosuppression.
The study appeared in the October issue of Liver Transplantation (vol 12: pp. 1523-1528, 2006), a journal published jointly by The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society. It was accompanied by a "highlight editorial" authored by Prof. Thomas Starzl (Transplantation Institute, Pittsburgh, USA), a pioneer in the field of solid organ transplantation.

Thanks to a cooperation project between the ULB and the University of Boumerdès (Algeria), two Algerian researchers are undergoing training at the IBMM for one month. Djouher Ait-Idir has joined the Cytokines Laboratory (Véronique Kruys and Cyril Gueydan) and Leila Mizab works in the Experimental Allergology (Alain Jacquet). This training courses take place after several visits of ULB teachers at Boumerdès.
The DBM (Department of Molecular Biology) will probably buy a Time lapse fluorescence microscopy. Several demonstrations are planed at the IBMM : after Delta, Leica and Zeiss will show their equipment. Researchers interested will be invited to test this material.

In April, Delphi Genetics and Eurogentec signed a partnership for the marketing of StabyTM products in Europe and the United States. The StabyTM products are kits of molecular biology developed by Delphi Genetics. Thanks to theses kits, experiments of DNA cloning have higher efficiency. Eurogentec and Delphi Genetics have organized seminars about StabyTM in research centers (academic and private) during these last weeks.

Since September, DNAVision is located in the IPG's building on the Aéropole. Its 15 scientists propose their specialised services for the pharmaceutical industry and for the academic research : genotype, full Affymetrix expression profiling, real time PCR… Every laboratory can send or let its samples to analyse at the Aéropole, in a ISO17025 quality environment (the first in Europe).

The ULB, in collaboration with the UMH and the Centre de Culture Scientifique organize a seminar cycle for teachers titled "Les sciences du vivant en questionS".
These seminars propose to inform about the latest publications or results in research and to provoke discussion about social and ethical questions. The cycle is organized thanks to the scientific collaboration of researchers - in particular from the Biopole ULB Charleroi -, on Wednesday at the CCS (ULB-Parentville).
