The IRIBHM is a research institute of the
Faculty of Medicine of the "Université
libre de Bruxelles, Université d’Europe" (ULB).
It was founded in the nineteen sixties by J.E. Dumont and A. Ermans with the
aim to apply an interdisciplinary approach to the study of endocrinology and,
in particular, the pathophysiology of the thyroid gland. Over the years, the
Institute has thrived into a multiplicity of groups, totaling 130 people, with
diversifying research interests, all related to the study of the transduction
of biological signals (see : research themes). The Institute is staffed by researchers with diverse training,
including physicians, physicists, (bio)chemists and biologists.
The activities of the IRIBHM are taking place on two different campuses
of the ULB: Campus Erasme in the suburb of Brussels and Campus Gosselies where it is
part of the Institut de Biologie Moléculaire et Médicale ( IBMM). The IRIBHM has privileged interactions with the
Laboratory of Medical Genetics and the Laboratory of Neurophysiology.
