Researcher at NUPI associated with the UN Programme. Thune is a political scientist from the University of Oslo, and holds a master's degree (Msc) in international relations from London School of Economics and Political Science. Thune's academic work has theoretically been oriented towards international ethics, security studies and political theory. He is currently preparing a project, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, on the ethics of force and the moral dilemmas of humanitarian interventions.

Thune (with Knut Nustad) has recently concluded an article entitled "Norway: Political Consensus and the Problem of Accountability". This work analyse Norwegian policy and
checks and balances relevant to international military involvements". He has also been involved in an ongoing debate on economic sanctions as an instrument of the international community. Thune has also been associated with an international working group analysing the present sanctions regime in Iraq.
