Isabelle Ioannides (Cyprus/France) is currently an Economic and
Social Research Council-funded PhD candidate in the Department of
Peace Studies, University of Bradford, where she is also the General
Teaching Assistant for undergraduate students. Her PhD looks at
policy learning in externally assisted police reform, with a particular
focus on EU efforts in Macedonia.
Isabelle first joined the 'ESDP Democracy' project in 2002 as a
Pre-doctoral Researcher at the Bonn International Centre for Conversion
(BICC), and in 2003 moved to the Department of Peace Studies, University
of Bradford where she was initially Project Associate and then a
Pre-doctoral Researcher for 'ESDP Democracy' until the end of the
project. In this context, she is also a Research Associate in the
Institute of European Studies, Université Libre de Bruxelles
(ULB).
Isabelle was previously the Parliamentary Liaison Officer at the
European Bureau for Conservation and Development in Brussels, for
which she co-ordinated the activities of the Intergroup on Sustainable
Development in the European Parliament. She has also completed a
traineeship with the European Commission, in the Forward Studies
Unit (renamed Group of Policy Advisers), and worked as a journalist
for POLITIS, a national daily newspaper in Cyprus, and POSTA EUROPE,
a French-Turkish monthly newspaper in Paris. As the Chemical Weapons
Convention Co-ordinator at the Union of Concerned Scientists in
Washington DC, Isabelle led a rapid action campaign for the ratification
of the CWC by the US Senate. Her previous experience also includes
internships with the Middle East Journal of the Middle East Institute,
in Washington DC and the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg.
Isabelle is an active participant in citizen peace-building efforts
in Cyprus, the Balkans, and the Middle East. She has received training
in conflict resolution, negotiation, and non-violent communication,
and has participated in international debates on the role of civil
society in the peaceful resolution of conflicts. She is an active
member of the Democratic Leadership Programme (DLP) of the Council
of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle East Network of the
International Eco-Peace Village, Cyprus.
Isabelle holds a BA (Distinction) in foreign affairs and French
literature and civilisation from the University of Virginia, a DEA
in political science from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris
("Sciences-Po Paris") and an MRes (Distinction) in international
relations from the University of Bradford.
