Created
in 1963, the Institute for European Studies of the ULB is one of
the oldest research and teaching centre totally dedicated to the
study of the European Union.
It has delivered over 3500 specialisation diplomas in European law,
economy and politics, in over forty years. There are many Institute
alumni in European Institutions, national and international public
service, as well as in the private sector, businesses, research
centres and the media. The Institute is proud of counting among
its former students a European Commissioner, a judge of the Court
of first instance, several Members of European Parliament and national
Ministers.
The Institute is also a Research and Higher Studies on the European
Union Centre. About twenty teachers from the ULB take part in its
research programs, along with twenty external scientific collaborators.
Every year, the Institute welcomes a dozen visiting researchers
from other Universities in the Union, from the United States, Latin
America and Asia.
Since 1998, the Institute is the Jean Monnet Pole in Brussels, and
takes part in many research programs that are funded by the European
Union, other international organisations and federal and regional
Belgian authorities.
Many debates on the state of the Union take place within the Institute
as well. Twenty or so colloquiums are organised within its walls
every year, as well as numerous seminars, public debates, conferences
and such…

Teaching
Some
200 students, selected on their academic achievements, follow courses
taught in both French and English.
At least a dozen nationalities make up this cosmopolitan student body,
each student seeking to specialise in Law, Economics or European Politics,
as well as attending general multidisciplinary courses.
The teaching staff is made up of around 100 researchers, including specialists
in European Studies, internationally recognised researchers, EU officials
and actors in the development of Europe.

Research
Specialised
and interdisciplinary courses on European subjects are given by economists,
specialists in law and political studies, historians, sociologists and
philosophers.
Every year the Institute collaborates with top international teams to
organise symposiums and research seminars.
Some 50 theses are in preparation in the two Doctoral Schools.

Public Forum
Every
year the Institute organises numerous seminars and public debates on the
main questions concerning Europe and its future development.
Members of the European Commission, MEPs, diplomats and high-ranking EU
officials, major political personalities, scholars and intellectuals are
invited to present their own analyses of the dynamics of the EU to audiences
composed of specialists and non-specialists.

Expertise
The members of the Institute are often called upon
in their capacity as experts by EU institutions and by Member-State governments.
They are also invited to comment on European questions in the international
press.

International Cooperation
The Institute has buit up a vast and rich network
of international cooperation with the most prestigious research centres
in Europe, the US, Asia, Latin America and North Africa.

The Alumni Association
The Alumni Association (alumnIEE) regularly organises
conferences on European topics. The annual graduation ceremony and the
dinner which follows are the occasion for former and fresh graduates from
the Institute to meet and exchange their various experiences.
