Serena Bolis received her Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics in 2009 at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. During the Master she followed a Double Degree program (T.I.M.E.) in which she graduated at Université libre de Bruxelles in 2012 and at Politecnico di Milano in 2013.
In 2013 she was awarded a FRIA Fellowship grant and she started a joint PhD between Université libre de Bruxelles and Universiteit Gent.
Her research activities involve the study, both numerical and experimental, of the formation and the propagation of solitons in liquid crystals. In particular she is interested in the amplification of the soliton through the addition of a fluorescent material in the liquid crystal, in the characteristic of the dye emission in a liquid crystalline matrix and in the dynamics that the soliton can follow in such a medium.
With the aid of the Philippe Wiener - Maurice Anspach Fondation, she is currently spending six months as a graduate visiting student at the Soft Matter Photonics group at the University of Oxford to work on flexoelectro optic effect in dye doped liquid crystals.
