Studying at ULB: Our offer

The ECTS grading scale

The diploma supplement provides data that make local degrees, programmes of study and grading systems easier to understand at international level, and thus help institutions with questions of academic recognition. Among the data included in the diploma supplement is an explanation of the local grading system, as well as its translation into the ECTS grading scale.

Local grades

In the French-speaking Community of Belgium, the final assessment of a course takes the form of a grade between 0 and 20. To succeed, a student must obtain at least 10/20. The academic year and the complete cycle of study are also evaluated globally, the minimum level in that case being an average of 12/20. This means that a student who would score 10/20 for all of his courses would technically pass each individual course but fail the academic year or cycle. This was designed as a quality-enhancement mechanism.
