The Elsevier boycott

Of course, several of the above critics of Elsevier apply equally to the other for-profit publishers (Springer also practices bundling, just to mention one example). Since 2012 I try to avoid commercial publishers as much as possible, submitting my papers instead either to electronic journals that are free for both authors and readers (the so-called diamond open access model), or to journals owned by learned societies (such as ACM and SIAM).

I believe there is no legitimate reason for researchers to transfer one's copyright on a paper to a publisher. If you haven't yet made your mind on this issue, you might be interested in reading Reinhard Diestel's take on the subject.
