Description: The marriage between tele- communications and infor-matics has already produced many of the "telematics" inventions needed for sustainable mobility. Although the programme largely focuses on road transport, it is also fashioning a more efficient and competitive future for combined transport by developing systems which allow a smoothe changeover from one transport means to another.

Title: Victoria Transport Policy Institute
Description: The Victoria Transport Policy Institute is dedicated to innovative research and analysis. Our goal is to develop practical tools for incorporating social and environmental values into transportation decision making. Much of our work involves describing, quantifying and evaluating transportation benefits, costs and equity impacts. Comprehensive analysis of these impacts is essential for good planning. Our research is among the most current available and has been widely applied. Our resources can help determine: - The full costs and net benefits of a plan or policy. - How costs are distributed. - How to effectively incorporate these impacts into the decision making process. - The net benefits of planning options, transportation demand management strategies, different travel modes, new technologies, and alternative fuels. - The full impacts of a road improvement or traffic calming program.

Title: CCET- Sustainable Transport in CEE Cities
Parent: OECD
Description: What are the principal urban transport issues facing cities in Central and Eastern Europe? Motor vehicle traffic is growing dramatically in these cities, resulting in congestion, air pollution, and other environmental, economic and social problems. As these cities struggle to cope, they are also adapting their public transport systems to meet changing requirements and severe budget constraints. Within a context of changing social and economic conditions, national policy makers and city managers are striving to develop new policy approaches and stable sources of financing which will have important implications for the environment, social conditions, and economic growth of cities.

Title: The European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign
Description: The European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign was launched at the end of the European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns, which took place in Aalborg, Denmark from 24-27 May 1994. The Conference was jointly convened by the City of Aalborg and the European Commission, and prepared by ICLEI. The objective of the Campaign is to promote development towards sustainability at the local level through Local Agenda 21 processes, by strengthening partnership among all actors in the local community as well as inter-authority co-operation, and relating this process to the European Union's action in the field of Urban Environment, and the work of the Urban Environment Expert Group. The Campaign is formed by municipal signatories of the Aalborg Charter as Campaign Participants. Its Supporters are major European networks and associations of local authorities including the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), Eurocities, ICLEI, United Town Organisation (UTO) and Healthy Cities, who co-ordinate their efforts through a Coordinating Committee. The Campaign is served by t a Campaign Office based in Brussels. The Campaign Sponsors including the European Commission and the Danish City of Aalborg make the activity happen through their financial contributions. About 120 European cities, towns and counties have up to now signed the Aalborg Charter and thereby joined the Campaign.

Title: STEPhome page
Description: The Sustainable Transport Emergency Program is an informal international collaborative communications and support activity being developed under the aegis of EcoPlan and The Commons. It had its origins in a series of ad hoc email exchanges among a gradually expanding network of researchers, academics, planners, public servants and activists in different countries, a number of whom had attended the March 1996 OECD international conference, Towards Sustainable Transportation. The central thesis of STEP -- which was reflected in some but not the majority of the presentations made at that conference -- is that the clock is ticking and that we cannot afford to wait before beginning to make our transportation systems much more sustainable. STEP has been created as a practical reaction to what a number of us consider to be a real emergency situation which calls for prompt and wide-spread action -- starting today! It is, thus, the chafing or leading edge of the Access program to which it is closely linked.

Title: INES Workshop: Davidson abstract
Description: Abstract. Sustainable transport options for African countries. Developing adequate and suitable transport systems in African countries to cope with future economic and social needs pose serious problems for these countries. A large number of them are yet to go through their threshold of development and coping with survival needs is paramount. African countries as most worldwide have come to rely on petroleum based road transport systems that are expensive, infrastructurally demanding and environmentally unattractive. In the last two decades, petroleum transport fuels have doubled and steadily accounts for 55-60% of the total oil use. Over half of these countries have less than 500 km paved roads per million people and over a third of these are in poor condition. Emissions form existing road transport systems only increase local, regional and global environmental concerns. Overcoming these dilemmas and developing transport system that are efficient, reliable, flexible and sustainable is a major task for authorities in the continent.
