THE INTERNATIONAL PARENTHOOD - DRUG ABUSE NETWORK WAS FOUNDED IN BRUSSELS, JUNE 10 1994, ACCORDING THE FOLLOWING DECLARATION:
Gathered in Brussels on June 8, 9 and 10,1994, the participants of the
first International Congress on Parenthood and Drug Abuse acknowledge the
results of numerous scientific studies devoted to the acceptance and care
required by drug using parents and their children.
They regret that acceptance and care of drug-using parents remains
inadequate in many parts of the world.
The undersigned recognize the specific tasks of their professional
field and decide to found the International Network Parenthood and Drug
Abuse.
They assign three principal goals to this new International Network :
1. to promote the exchange of information between researchers who conduct scientific work in relation to drug using young or future parents and their children; to promote the development and the coordination of these investigations and encourage their widespread dissemination.
2. to inform the members of the Network, non-specialized professionals and the general public of the different methods of caring and supporting for drug -using young and future parents and their children.
3. to inform decision makers of the need to put in place sufficient and appropriate treatment and healthcare for drug using young and future parents and their children.
The International Network Parenthood and Drug Abuse will be multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary:
- the proceedings and publications will be elaborated in several languages,
to start with, in English and French, so as to enhance the exchange of
information between professionals throughout the world.
- it shall be composed of the professionals and the institutions who
are willing to join us: psychologists, general practitioners, social workers,
nurses, legal experts, polititians or others who are concerned with young
and future parents who are drug users and their children.
The International Network Parenthood and Drug Abuse will aim initially to ensure :
- an English/French publication of the proceedings of the first International
Congress on the subject of Parenthood and Drug Abuse;
- distribution on a large scale of a periodical newsletter;
- the preparation of the second International Congress on the subject
of Parenthood and Drug Abuse scheduled for summer 1996.
