The "Bundesbeauftragte für Ausländerfragen" (delegate of the federal government for aliens affairs) is independent and responsible for supporting the government in the development of alien legislation through the transmission of non-binding proposals and opinions as well as to watch over the equal treatment of aliens and nationals and the respect of the rights of aliens.

The "Bundesbeauftragter für Asylangelegenheiten" (federal delegate for asylum matters) is responsible for ensuring the legality of decisions by the Bundesamt für die Anerkennung ausländischer Flüchtlinge (BAFl) (Federal Office for the Recognition of Foreign Refugees) and the administrative courts in asylum cases which he might appeal. He acts on behalf of the state and is dependent on the Ministry of the Interior.
