SASSU Elects New NEC

Brussels, 30/04/2002

On April 20th, 2002, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of member tertiary education institutions of the South African Student Sports Union (SASSU), elected their new National Executive Committee (NEC) that will hold office until April 16th 2004, when SASSU will celebrate its 10th birthday. The NEC elected biennially, is responsible for the co-ordination of all SASSU's activities on a national and international level and comprises of students and staff members connected to member institutions of SASSU. The Constitution of SASSU determines that the President shall be one of a minimum of three bona fide students, while the Chairperson shall be one of a minimum of three administrators or officials in the employ of a member. The newly elected NEC is made up of the following persons:

President - Mr. Malesela Francis Maleka, Vaal Triangle Technikon (Student)
Chairperson - Mr. Tobias Titus, Peninsula Technikon (Staff member);
Vice-Chairperson - Miss Marissa Londwa, University of Natal (Staff member)
Secretary-General - Mr. Louis Nel, SASSU National Secretariat (CEO)
Finance & Marketing Officer - Mr. Dave Carr, Durban Institute of Technology (Staff member);
Strategist & Research Officer - Mr. Ken W Rinquest, Cape Technikon (Staff member);
Alumni Coordinator - Miss Thokozani Vilakazi, Durban Institute of Technology (Staff member);
Sports Coordinator - Mr. Poenie Holm, University of Natal (Staff member)
Provincial Coordinator - Mr. Duncan Phadziri, Technikon Northern Gauteng (Student);
Development Officer - Miss Lerato P Mkhize, Technikon Northern Gauteng (Student).

The AGM also noted with regret, that Mrs. Anashnee Domun, Executive Assistant to the CEO has resigned after being offered an attractive position by the National Lotteries Board. The NEC will therefore fill the vacant position as soon as possible since the National Secretariat, that is currently also the administrative headquarters for the Confederation of University and College Sports Associations (CUCSA) of Africa Zone VI, cannot afford a staff shortage with the upcoming events, such as SASSU Winter Games (July 2002), CUCSA Games (July 2002) and the FISU Forum that will be held in Cape Town from September 8th to September 14th, 2002.
