Organization Rowing WUC Well in Progress

Brussels, 20/09/2001
The organization of the Rowing World University Championship is well in progress. The Rowing WUC, to be held in Nottingham from August 22nd to 24th, 2002, will form part of a nine-day celebration of rowing, managed in partnership with the Amateur Rowing Association, which will include ‘The Commonwealth Rowing Regatta’.

The National Water Sports Center, Holme Pierrepont
Venue
The championship will be based at the National Water Sports Center, Holme Pierrepont which has hosted a variety of elite-level rowing events, including Commonwealth Games, Senior and Junior World Championships, European Junior Championships and (annually) all major domestic rowing National Championships.

The Holme Pierrepont course lies about six kilometers from the Center of Nottingham, and within ten kilometers of the accommodation centers. The Center has expansive changing and catering provision, twenty-four hour security (including CCTV) and modern gymnasium and warm-up facilities, complete with ergometers, on site.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided at the two local Universities, Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent University, who regularly service these Domestic and International events, with additional administration headquarters based at The University of Nottingham. A campus-based University of over 16,000 students, the University of Nottingham is set in parkland four kilometers east of Nottingham City Center. It can offer over 3,000 residential beds on the main campus, with a further 1,000 within a kilometer in self-catering student hostels. A major player in British University Sport, Nottingham hosts several BUSA Championships and European or International sports events every year. The University is the residence of choice for rowing crews training or competing at Holme Pierrepont, and annually caters for over three hundred athletes attending the British National Championships. The majority of GB National Team members have regularly been based at the University during vacation national-squad trials or training camps, ensuring the on-site accommodation managers are aware of and receptive to the requirements of elite athletes, particularly rowers.

High Standard of Rowing Officiating
Great Britain and Nottingham take prides in providing a very high standard of rowing officiating. A large number of appropriate event officials are resident in the Nottingham/East Midlands area, whilst many other top GB FISA-qualified officials have offered their support. Mike Williams, a member of the Organizing Committee, has been the Senior FISA Rowing Judge at the last two FISU Regattas in 1998 and 2000.

Student Rowing Conference
The OC intends to organize a Student Rowing Conference to compare the student rowing experience around the world, utilizing the top-line domestic and overseas coaches who will be in residence for the FISU and Commonwealth Regatta. Combining the WUC with a conference will give the participants a unique opportunity to exchange ideas.

Website
In order to keep all parties informed a website has been set up since September 1st. More detailed information on the Rowing WUC and other events of the nine-day long Rowing Festival can be found at http://www.festivalofrowing.co.uk.
