12th World University Cross Country Championship in Jena (GER) 25/03/2000

Brussels, 27/03/2000
It's no secret that FISU is often the jumping-off ground for great world sports champions. The World University Cross Country Championships are no exception to this rule, providing the springboard for such athletes as Romania's Ionescu and Ghican, Spain's Vaquero and Serrano, together with Australia's Moneghetti and Kenya's Muturi.
In 1998, during the Luton edition in Great Britain, 42 national university teams lined up at the starting line, two of which would shine in particular: the British for the women, and the Spanish for the men.
The 2000 edition, held this week-end in the sports centre of the University of Jena in Germany.

The circuit included a rather technical demanding 2,000 metres track that the men had to negotiate 6 times and the women 3 times. This magnificent course was in fact already used since November 13, 1999, when the University of Jena welcomed the "Internationalen Deutschen Hochschulmeisterchaften im Crosslauf", a high level cross country competition that offered an occasion for a full-scale test run before the FISU rendezvous.

Last saturday we had windy and cloudy conditions but no rain during both men and women races.
Amalia Rosa from Portugal won the women race, she made a very strong effort just before the finish line and beat Denisa Costescu and Cristina Casandra two Romanian girls for a very undecided podium.

It was a bit easier for Günther Weidlinger from Austria. He took the gold medal in the men’s race with a seven seconds advantage, just before Aziz Driouche from Morocco . Morocco had a very strong team with four athletes placed in the top five.

Date: 25/03/2000
