The 7th edition of the Summer School "The EU Area of Criminal Justice" will take place in Brussels from 27 June to 1 July 2011.

The objective of the Summer School is to provide the participants with an extensive knowledge of EU criminal law. The classes offer both theoretical and practical elements. They are conducted by academics, national experts or European officials coming from European institutions and having an every day practice of the European penal area.

The Summer School is particularly designed for practitioners in the field of police cooperation and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, EU or national civil servants, as well as researchers and students interested in EU “Freedom, Security and Justice” policies.

Concerning the programme: the duration is for a period of one week, lectures are in English, participants will receive a certificate of attendance, the final examination entitles participants to receive 3 ECTS and lawyers to gain 40 points from the French Brussels Bar.

 

The Summer School includes essentially 4 topics: :

• subject I (day 1): general introduction (historical evolution, institutional and decision- making issues, jurisdictional control)
• subject II (day 2 and 3): judicial co-operation, the European Arrest Warrant, mutual recognition and approximation of legislation
• subject III (day 4): the actors of the European Penal Area, including police co-operation and data protection
• subject IV (day 5): terrorism and the external relations

Special events during the Summer School:

  • Wednesday 30 of June 2010 : Evening Conference “First implementation semester of the Lisbon Treaty: assessment and prospects”
  • Saturday 3 of July 2010: PhD Seminar “The EU Area of Criminal Justice”

 

 

The Summer School is organised by the Free University of Brussels, The Institute for European Studies (ULB-IEE) and the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN).
