The European Union represents one of the world’s largest markets. As such, it is a key actor in WTO negotiations, playing a crucial role in attempts to regulate the process of globalisation, and to promote sustainable development, social standards and North-South cooperation. The EU is also, along with its member states, the first provider of humanitarian aid to developing countries, the most active entity in peace-keeping operations and in the monitoring of new democracies. Beside trade, aid and mediation, the EU coordinates the foreign and defence
policies of its member states and shapes conflict prevention policy worldwide.
Policy makers involved in international affairs, can no longer afford
to ignore the EU’s objectives, instruments, strategies and policies,
which contribute to shaping the contemporary international order.
